Project scope,plan and initial statictics
This Legionary Project is to emulate the life of a Roman Legionary stationed at a frontier fort. Obviously, we live in the 21st century and I can't spend every day living the exact life so this has to be taken into account.
My standard day will include marching/walking for a minimum of 8-12 miles everyday (this isn't a Legionary campaign so I won't be walking 20 miles everyday). I will be doing this in a weighted vest of around 9kg and a rucksack of about 10kg.
I will be doing manual labour such as digging, clearing forested ground, cutting and clearing fallen trees, building a turf/ wood wall, all of this will be done with hand tools and I will aim to spend roughly 1.5-2 hours doing this.
I will also be doing ' military training' for an hour. This will be in the form of circuit training with dumbbells and a weighted vest. I will be posting these workouts throughout the week for any improvements people may have.
From a diet standpoint I'll be eating the diet legionairres would of eaten ; whole food, mainly grains with vegetables and meat. My daily diet will consist of roughly 150g of oats and a small amount if whole milk, for lunch I will be having stew made og locally available vegetables, meat and sourdough bread which will be part of my grain ration. Due to my partner not wanting to have legionairres stew everyday for dinner we will still be having whole foods and I will try and make it as close to Roman food as possible. During this time I'll also be trying roman recipes. My overall daily calories will come to around 3000 which would go with the allotted Legionary grain ration and other foods to supplement it.
My current physical stats are as follows.
Height : 5ft 4/164cm. I think for this project my height is a good representation as the average roman height was around 5ft4-5ft 7, roman armour that has been found fits this height range not to mention skeleton remains.
My weight is currently around 157.6lbs/71.24kg which I believe is above the average roman soldier weight.
The next set of measurements are for comparison at the end of the project
Chest circumference : 42 & 1/8" 107cm
Shoulder circumference : 47 & 1/4" 120cm
Right Bicep (tensed) : 15 & 3/8" 39cm
Left Bicep (tensed) : 15 & 3/8" 39cm
Right Forearm : 12 & 1/2 " 32cm
Left Forearm: 12 & 2/8" 31cm
Waist: 33 & 7/8" 86cm
Hips: 34 & 5/8" 88cm
Right Thigh: 22" 56cm
Left Thigh: 22" 56cm
Right Calf: 15 & 3/4" 40cm
Left Calf: 15 & 3/4" 40cm
I think physically I will lose some muscle mass and possibly some body fat but this will depend on how active I am, obviously the 3000 calories is meant for a Legionary that's active all day, so the overall calories may need to be adjusted and the macros likewise. I have a fitbit which I will track some of my metrics on, such as heart rate, cardio fitness which sits at 65 resting heart rate and 47-51 cardio score respectively.
Mentally, while I do have mild anxiety I think the huge increase in carbohydrates will have an effect, as well as the extra activity as, before this I would workout 3-4 times a week for one hour.
I'm writing this up on the last few hours of not being a Legionary but am looking forward to the month ahead. I will try and update in the evenings/ following morning as well as a physical update every Friday. If you have an comments or reccimendations, please let me know on here or on Reddit.
